Memories of Van

November 16th, 2009 by Rose

I watched Dead Man Walking the other day, I’ve seen some of it before, it’s a pretty old film now. It’s about a guy who is on death row and the salvation of his soul through Jesus before he dies, encouraged by a young nun.

There was a point in the film, where the clock is ticking down the final minutes of his life and it took me back to the night when Steve and I sat in vigil on the 2nd December 2005 minutes and seconds before the hanging of a young Australian boy Van Tuong Nguyen after being convicted of drug trafficking in Singapore. I don’t know the circumstances of how he got in so deep. But I felt compassion for him because I have done stupid stupid things in my life, and I think how thankful I was able to find a new way, a new life and grow and evolve into who I am today. He never got the chance to do that.
